Trezor.io/Start® (Official) | Congrats on your new Trezor

Welcome! This official starter guide will walk you through setting up, securing, and using your Trezor hardware wallet safely and confidently.

Official Quick start — ready in minutes This guide is tailored for new users and covers setup, recovery, security tips, and first transactions.

What is a Trezor and why it matters

A Trezor is a hardware wallet: a small, dedicated device that stores your private keys offline. Keeping keys off the internet dramatically reduces the risk of theft from hacks, phishing, or malware on your computer. Trezor pairs with Trezor Suite or compatible apps to let you view balances, sign transactions, and manage accounts — but the private keys never leave the device.

Friendly reminder: Trezor is a tool to control your crypto — not to custody it for you. If you hold the recovery phrase, you hold the funds.

First steps — unboxing and initial checks

Unbox carefully

Inspect the packaging. Official Trezor packaging includes tamper-evident seals and clear labeling. If anything looks tampered with, contact the vendor or Trezor support before proceeding.

What you’ll need

  • Your Trezor device (Model T or One) and the supplied USB cable.
  • A computer (Windows, macOS, or Linux) with an up-to-date browser.
  • A pen and the recovery sheet (paper) that came in the box — you’ll need to write down 12–24 words.
Pro tip: Do not connect the device until you are on the official start page: trezor.io/start. Always check the URL and SSL lock in your browser.

Setup: connect, initialize, and create a wallet

Connecting your new Trezor to the official start flow is straightforward. Open your browser and go to trezor.io/start. Follow the on-screen steps to install Trezor Bridge (if needed) and launch Trezor Suite or the web app flow.

Step-by-step

  1. Connect the device using the supplied cable.
  2. Choose Create a new wallet on the device and the app.
  3. Set a PIN on the device using the on-screen layout.
  4. Write down the recovery seed (12 or 24 words) exactly as shown — in order — on the provided paper sheet.
  5. Confirm the recovery words when asked to ensure you copied them correctly.
Do not: take photos of your recovery seed, copy it to a cloud note, or type it into any device. Keep it offline and in multiple secure locations if possible.

Security essentials — keep control, reduce risk

Security is layered. Your Trezor provides a solid root of trust, but you should combine it with best practices on the host computer and in your physical world:

  • Keep your recovery phrase private and offline.
  • Use a strong PIN; memorize it (don’t store it near the device).
  • Keep device firmware updated via Trezor Suite to receive security patches.
  • Use the device screen to verify every address and transaction — the device is the single source of truth.
Critical: Trezor or support will never ask for your recovery phrase. If anyone asks, it’s a scam.

Using your Trezor: sending, receiving, and apps

Once set up, you can use Trezor Suite to manage multiple cryptocurrencies. Each coin usually requires an app (installed via Ledger Live–style management inside Suite). When sending funds, verify the destination address on your Trezor screen — that verification is the security check that protects you from malware trying to hijack addresses.

Receive funds

To receive crypto: open the account in Trezor Suite, click Receive, and confirm the receiving address on your device. Share only that address with the sender.

Send funds

To send, prepare the transaction in Suite, then approve it on your Trezor. Check the amount and recipient on the device screen before confirming.

Backup & recovery — the recovery phrase is everything

Your recovery phrase is the backup for your wallet. If your device is lost, stolen, or damaged, you can restore funds on a new Trezor (or compatible wallet) using that phrase. Treat it like the keys to a safe: store it securely, ideally split across locations or using a fireproof safe.

Suggested backups: Keep one copy in a secure home safe and one off-site (e.g., a bank deposit box). Consider metal backups for long-term durability.

Troubleshooting common problems

Device not recognized

  • Ensure cable is data-capable (some cables are charge-only).
  • Try a different USB port or computer.
  • Install or reinstall Trezor Bridge or the Trezor Suite app from trezor.io/start.

Forgot PIN

If you forget your PIN, you must perform a factory reset and restore from your recovery phrase. That’s why safeguarding the recovery phrase is essential.

Next steps & recommended practices

  • Install only official apps and browser extensions. Verify download URLs.
  • Keep your host computer updated and use reputable anti-malware tools.
  • Consider a passphrase (optional advanced feature) for an extra hidden wallet — only for experienced users.
  • Practice small test transactions before sending large sums.
Quick checklist before sending large amounts:
  1. Confirm device firmware is up-to-date.
  2. Verify recipient address on the device screen.
  3. Confirm fees and amount in the app and on-device.
